Skin changes during menopause are very common. You may notice that before and during this time, your skin feels dry and thin, or you may begin to see more wrinkles. In some cases people may experience acne during Menopause as a result of Hormonal Fluctuations.

When the production of Hormones Oestrogen and Progesterone rapidly drop off with Menopause, most people see it in their skin. The skin may become dry or less plump.

Menopause occurs as women reach early to mid 50’s. Oestrogen effects every organ system of the body. Oestrogen receptors are most abundant around the Genital area, face and lower limbs. Therefor these areas are especially vulnerable to reduced amounts of circulating oestrogen and are the reason for certain skin conditions.

Some skin conditions following this are:

Atrophic Vulvoraginitis

-    Thinning of the vaginal skin

-    Symtoms include itchiness, tenderness and painful urination.

Hirsutism ( abnormal hair growth )

-    Facial Hirsutism is very common in post-menopausal women who are not on HRT.

Alopecia ( hair loss from areas where it is normally present )

-    Approx. a third of post-menopausal women may develop hair loss

-    This is usually at the front and the top of the scalp.

Menopausal Flushing

-    Occurs in 70-80% of women throughout the pre-menopausal stage

-    Reddening of the face, neck and upper chest that lasts for 3-5mins.

-    May be associated with sweating, palpitations, anxiety and sleep problems.

Collagen drops 30% in the first 5 years of menopause, then approximately another 2% each year after that for the next 20 or so years.

You may not be able to stop menopause but you can certainly help your skin at home to look and feel its best. Topical hydration will be your best friend as the skin lacks the capability to hold onto moisture. Best to use moisturisers with Hyaluronic acid to draw the moisture into the skin. A moisturiser with ceramides can also help the moisture from escaping.

TREATMENTS FRO SKIN CHANGES DURING MENOPAUSE

If noticing an increase in facial hair IPL hair removal may be a good option.

To help strengthen collagen we a few choices could include LED light therapy, Skin Needling, Radio Frequency and Plasma Fibroblast.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME

The simplest home remedy for menopausal skin is a good moisturiser that contains Hyaluronic Acid. Incorporating pro-aging ingredients like Retinol ( vitA ), Vit C, Glycolic and Lactic acids.

Make sure to stay Hydrated as your skin is your last organ of elimination so it is the last place to receive internal Hydration this is why topical Hydration is very important in skin health.
